Cabo Verde has one of the more pleasantly deceptive climates in the Atlantic. On paper, the numbers look almost boring. Temperatures rarely swing more than a handful of degrees across the entire year. Humidity holds a steady 70% regardless of season. In practice, this means the archipelago offers something rare. You can show up almost any month and find warmth, sunshine, and consistent beach weather that most tropical destinations only deliver half the year. The trade winds that sweep in off the North Atlantic are the invisible hand behind all of this. They keep things cooler and drier than Cabo Verde's latitude would otherwise suggest. The year divides into two fairly distinct phases. From roughly November through June, Cabo Verde sits in a prolonged dry season. Rainfall is either absent or so light it barely registers. The harmatão, a dry dusty wind that blows in from the Sahara, occasionally clouds the skies between December and March with a fine haze. It tends to pass quickly and rarely dampens a trip in any meaningful way. The second phase, running from July through October, brings the wet season. Wet is relative here. Cabo Verde sees far less rain than most countries at similar latitudes. Even at the height of it in September, you're typically looking at short, sharp showers rather than sustained downpours. Santiago and the wetter leeward islands receive more of this rainfall than the flat, low-lying islands like Sal and Boa Vista, which stay drier year-round. What makes Cabo Verde distinctive as a climate destination is the consistency. The coolest months, December through February, sit around 24-25°C (76-77°F) during the day. That's warm enough for swimming and sunbathing without feeling oppressive. By August and September, the peak of the warm season, temperatures nudge up to 29°C (84-85°F). This is comfortable rather than punishing. You never need to worry about the extremes that make other tropical archipelagos feel like a gamble.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach
For beach and relaxation travelers, the sweet spot is December through April. Daytime highs hover between 24°C (76°F) and 25°C (78°F). Rainfall is essentially zero. The trade winds keep things from feeling clammy. This is Cabo Verde at its most reliably pleasant.
Cultural
For cultural exploration, the shoulder months of October and November work well. Visit Santiago's Cidade Velha. Catch a morna performance in Mindelo. Explore the markets of Praia. The wet season has wrapped up. Crowds thin compared to peak winter. The landscape is still green from the rains.
Adventure
Adventure and hiking travelers should aim for November through January. Cooler air makes the volcanic interior of Santo Antão and Fogo feel manageable. Rather than sweltering.
Budget
Budget travelers willing to tolerate the occasional shower will find the best value in August and September. European peak-summer visitors are fewer in number. Accommodation tends to ease.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Cabo Verde.

Year-Round Essentials
High-factor reef-safe sunscreen
The equatorial Atlantic sun is stronger than the breeze suggests. You will spend more time outdoors than planned.
A good pair of sunglasses and a sun hat
not optional gear on the flatter, exposed islands like Sal.
Reef shoes or water sandals
Pack reef shoes. Rocky coasts and lurking urchins near Cabo Verde's reefs make them essential.
A light windbreaker
Bring a light jacket. Trade winds can chill deck evenings and elevated towns like Mindelo.
A dry bag or waterproof phone case
worth having for boat trips and beach days.
dry season months of November through April
Clothing
light cotton and linen layers
Footwear
Flat sandals and one pair of walking shoes cover most surfaces.
Layering Tip
Days stay warm, yet a thin layer helps after sunset, on Santo Antão. Nights on Fogo's upper slopes can dip sharply; a mid-layer fleece pays off if you hike the caldera.
wet season months of July through October
Clothing
Quick-dry fabrics are more comfortable when humidity combines with warmth.
Accessories
a light packable rain jacket
Layering Tip
You may not need it daily. When an afternoon squall hits, you will be grateful.
Plug Type
Type C and F
Voltage
220V and 50Hz
Adapter Note
Travelers from the US or UK need an adapter. Older devices may also require a voltage converter.
Skip These Items
Heavy denim stays damp in humidity and stifles in heat. Leave them behind. Leave the formal umbrella. Showers are brief and wind snaps them inside out. Thick boots are overkill unless you are tackling Santo Antão's multi-day trails. Trail runners are lighter and work just as well. A heavy winter coat is never necessary, even in January. Even with beaches everywhere, Cabo Verde leans conservative outside resorts. Skimpy outfits in towns and markets draw stares you may not want.
