Day Trips from Cabo Verde
The best excursions and trips you can do in a day
Full-Day Trips
Worth dedicating a whole day to explore.
Sal – Pedra Lume Salt Craters & Shark Bay
$45 pp (tour) or $30 (taxi split 4-ways) + $3 crater entryFloat in a dormant volcano’s pink salt lake, then walk barefoot among lemon sharks in ankle-deep turquoise shallows. This circuit shows Sal’s Martian interior before ending on a wild cabo verde beach where kitesurfers colour the horizon—perfect for photos and a picnic of local grogue cocktails.
Boa Vista – Viana Desert & Turtle Nesting Beach
$70 pp 4×4 tour including lunch; $45 quad rentalA 4×4 safari crosses miniature Sahara dunes that end abruptly at the Atlantic, followed by lunch in Povoação Velha village and a stop at Ervatão, one of the world’s top loggerhead nesting cabo verde beaches. Between July-October you might spot females laying eggs under starlight on the return leg.
Santiago – Cidade Velha & Tarrafal Concentration Camp
$55 pp (taxi 3-ways split) + $4 museum feesTrace Cabo Verde’s dark and golden history: first, the 1460 slave-market ruins of Cidade Velha (UNESCO), then coastal Tarrafal where Portuguese political prisoners were held. Finish with a swim at palm-lined Tarrafal beach, arguably one of the most scenic cabo verde beaches on Santiago.
São Vicente – Mindelo to Santo Antão Northern Villages
$20 ferry + $40 tour incl. lunchFerry to craggy Santo Antão for jaw-dropping ribeira drives, terraces of sugarcane, and a lunch stop at tiny Paúl valley where rum is distilled in 1800s copper stills. You’ll zig-zag through cloud-forest and sip fresh sugarcane juice before returning to the cabo verde nightlife of Mindelo by evening.
Fogo – Cha das Caldeiras Volcano Trek
$110 flight + $35 4×4 & guide + $6 park feeFly or ferry to Fogo for an other-worldly day: ascend black lava flows inside an 8-km-wide crater, taste wine grown in volcanic ash, and meet villagers who refused to leave after the 2014 eruption. The trek is steep but non-technical, and the cabo verde food—grilled chorizo with lava-roasted coffee—tastes of fire and earth.
Sal – Ilhéu Rabo de Junco Snorkel Safari
$65 pp incl. gear & lunchA short fisher-boat takes you to an uninhabited islet 2 km offshore, where a fringing reef explodes with tropical fish, sea-hares and the occasional turtle. After grilled lobster on deck you’ll circle Sal’s wild north cabo verde beaches unreachable by road, returning before kite-surf breees pick up.
Half-Day Options
Shorter excursions when time is limited.
Santa Maria Sal – Kitesurf Lesson at Ponta Preta
$55 incl. gearLearn to ride the steady trade winds on a shallow reef lagoon; instructors get beginners standing in 2 hours.

Mindelo São Vicente – Laginha Beach Sunset Paddle
$20 board & drinkRent a SUP and glide across mirror-calm bay as the sun drops behind Monte Cara; beach cafés fire up grills for early cabo verde nightlife.
Sal Rei Boa Vista – Quad Bike Coastal Loop

Day Trip Tips
Make the most of your excursions.
- Inter-island ferries can cancel in rough seas—always have a back-up plan and flexible tickets.
- Cash is king outside hotels; take euros (widely accepted) or withdraw CVE at airport ATMs on arrival.
- Tap water is mostly desalinated and safe, but bottled is cheap and handy for long drives.
- Sun reflection off pale sand is intense; re-apply reef-safe SPF even on cloudy cabo verde weather days.
- Taxis rarely use meters—agree price before you set off and pay in escudos for better rates.
- Book 4×4 or boat excursions the evening prior; groups depart early and fill up fast in high season.
- Bring passport for inter-island flights—domestic security still checks ID.
- Pack a light jacket December–February when Harmattan dust can drop evening temperatures to 18 °C.
