Day Trips from Cabo Verde

Day Trips from Cabo Verde

The best excursions and trips you can do in a day

Cabo Verde’s ten-island archipelago rewards curious day-trippers with volcanic moonscapes, hidden cabo verde beaches, and villages where morna music drifts through pastel alleys. From the main hubs of Sal, Boa Vista, Santiago, and São Vicente you can snorkel turtle-cleaning stations, hike ribeiras ribboned with sugarcane, or lunch on catch-of-the-day grilled with classic cabo verde food. Distances are short—rarely more than 60 km each way—but ferries, 4×4 tracks, and inter-island flights mean you’ll still feel like an explorer. Tackling even one of these side trips explains why many visitors rate the real highlights of cape verde as lying well beyond the hotel pool. Weather is obliging almost year-round (25 °C sunshine and trade-wind breezes), so the best time to visit cabo verde is whenever you’re free. Just remember: local ferries can be cancelled in rough seas, and guides prefer cash in euros or CVE. Book transport the evening before, pack reef-safe sunscreen, and you can be back for sunset cocktails and the lively cabo verde nightlife.

Day Trip Tips

Make the most of your excursions.

  • Inter-island ferries can cancel in rough seas—always have a back-up plan and flexible tickets.
  • Cash is king outside hotels; take euros (widely accepted) or withdraw CVE at airport ATMs on arrival.
  • Tap water is mostly desalinated and safe, but bottled is cheap and handy for long drives.
  • Sun reflection off pale sand is intense; re-apply reef-safe SPF even on cloudy cabo verde weather days.
  • Taxis rarely use meters—agree price before you set off and pay in escudos for better rates.
  • Book 4×4 or boat excursions the evening prior; groups depart early and fill up fast in high season.
  • Bring passport for inter-island flights—domestic security still checks ID.
  • Pack a light jacket December–February when Harmattan dust can drop evening temperatures to 18 °C.
