Month-by-Month Guide
January
January is peak tourist season with warm, dry weather and consistent sunshine. The harmattan winds may occasionally bring Saharan dust, creating hazy conditions. Strong trade winds make this an excellent month for wind sports, while beach conditions remain ideal with calm seas and pleasant temperatures.
February
February continues the peak season with excellent weather conditions and minimal rainfall. This is one of the best months for all outdoor activities, from beach relaxation to hiking. The famous Carnival celebrations take place across the islands, bringing busy cultural experiences and festivities.
March
March offers some of the best weather of the year with warm temperatures, clear skies, and virtually no rain. Trade winds remain strong, perfect for water sports enthusiasts. Tourist numbers stay high, but the excellent conditions make it worthwhile for beach holidays and island exploration.
April
April marks the transition toward warmer temperatures while maintaining dry conditions. The seas become calmer as trade winds begin to ease slightly, making it excellent for swimming and diving. This is still a popular month with good availability and pleasant weather throughout the archipelago.
May
May sees temperatures warming up as summer approaches, with continued dry conditions and abundant sunshine. Tourist crowds begin to thin out, offering better value and more peaceful beaches. The calmer winds make this an ideal time for diving, snorkeling, and exploring the underwater world.
June
June brings warmer temperatures and the driest conditions of the year. The lighter winds create calm seas perfect for water activities and boat trips. This shoulder season month offers excellent value with fewer tourists, while weather conditions remain ideal for all types of activities.
July
July is one of the warmest months with hot temperatures tempered by ocean breezes. Conditions remain predominantly dry, though occasional clouds may appear. European summer holidays bring increased visitor numbers, particularly to popular islands like Sal and Boa Vista, but beaches rarely feel overcrowded.
August
August marks the beginning of the rainy season, though rainfall remains modest by tropical standards. Temperatures peak during this month, with warm, humid conditions. Brief showers are possible but typically don't disrupt activities, and the landscape begins to turn green, offering a different perspective of the islands.
September
September is the wettest month, receiving most of the year's rainfall, though this still amounts to occasional showers rather than constant rain. The islands are at their greenest and most lush, creating impressive landscapes for photography. Fewer tourists mean better prices and a more authentic local experience.
October
October sees the tail end of the rainy season with decreasing showers and the landscape still beautifully green. Temperatures remain warm but become more comfortable as humidity drops. This is an excellent time for hiking as waterfalls and valleys are at their most impressive following the rains.
November
November marks the return to dry season with decreasing rainfall and increasingly pleasant conditions. Trade winds pick up again, bringing cooler breezes and excellent conditions for wind sports. Tourist numbers begin to increase as the high season approaches, but accommodation remains reasonably priced.
December
December brings perfect holiday weather with warm, dry conditions and steady sunshine. The trade winds provide comfortable cooling, and seas are generally calm for water activities. Tourist numbers surge during the Christmas and New Year period, so early booking is essential for the best accommodation and flight options.
